What is Bible Literacy?
It is knowing the Bible stories so that when a person reads, sees a film, hears a song with an allusion from the Bible he or she can understand the meaning of that reference.
A teacher of 26 years commenting about students now having the background to understand the allusions from the Bible.
Why are you having Bible story lessons on Thursday?
On the second Thursday each month from November to May at First United Methodist Church Mystic we are setting aside time to learn about Bible literature and invite our wider community, who may or may not be Methodists or perhaps not Christian, to gain these valuable tools for learning and understanding of literature, art, music, and film. We call it "Oh! That is What They Meant."
.Our lives in the 21st century have become packed with activities. Families may need support to give their children the added advantages of learning Bible stories to improve literacy. It is similar to the first Sunday Schools that were actually to teach literacy where they used the Bible as a text and was not so much a religious school. Read more...

Who will teach "Oh, That is What They Meant" ?
At First United Methodist Church Mystic our pastor is a retired professor of Old Testament and the past Executive Director of the Society of Biblical Literature. He will guide the lesson development. We have several public school teachers and professionals who will lead activities.
What are the goals of "Oh! That is What They Meant"?
Does First United Methodist Church Mystic have Sunday School?
Yes, 10 AM on Sunday is set aside for worship, Sunday School, and enjoying each others company. All are welcome to Sunday School too. Our goals and focus are different than "Oh! That is What They Meant" during Sunday School and are based on our understandings as a Christian Community.
